Awareness Efforts for Protecting the Black Sea Ecosystem and Reducing Marine Litter Continue!
Awareness-raising activities continue as part of the LitOUTer Project (BSB-785), which was completed in 2023. These activities, designed for young people and children, aim to protect the Black Sea ecosystem, reduce marine litter, and strengthen public awareness.
Within this scope, an awareness-raising educational event was organized at 88th Year Republic Anatolian High School as part of the project conducted by KTÜ Sürmene Faculty of Marine Sciences. The event began with a comprehensive presentation by Prof. Dr. Fatma Telli Karakoç, focusing on the sources, impacts, and solutions to marine litter. Following this, Prof. Dr. Coşkun Erüz addressed the threats of ghost fishing nets on the marine ecosystem. The program also featured contributions from Prof. Dr. Hacer Sağlam, Dr. Neira Purwanty Ismail, and MSc student Melike Tüysüz.
During the session, 9th-grade students actively listened to the discussions, asked insightful questions, and demonstrated a high level of interest and awareness regarding marine conservation. This interactive activity proved to be highly effective in enhancing environmental consciousness among young people, reinforcing their awareness of recycling, and strengthening their motivation to reduce marine litter.
